PETA responds to Lady Gaga's Meat Dress

Say What? Lady Gaga Is Crawling in Maggots

"Someone should whisper in her ear that there are more people who are upset by butchery than who are impressed by it. Meat is the decomposing flesh of a tormented animal who didn't want to die, and after a few hours under the TV lights, it would smell like the rotting flesh it is and likely be crawling in maggots — not too attractive, really."

PETA's president responds to Lady Gaga's meaty VMA outfit, a look she may have borrowed from a 2008 episode of America's Next Top Model. I don't know what's more predictable: Lady Gaga's outrageous wardrobe choice, or PETA's outrage?

she couldn't seem to make up her mind about her reasons for wearing this. had her message for wearing it be a little more consistent, i might have given this a second thought. looks tres uncomfortable if it is a real meat dress.

Here's a link to that article, by the way. http://new.music.yahoo.com/blogs/stopthepresses/279379/meet-the-mystery-meat-dress-lady-gaga-explains-rare-vmas-outfit/

I was reading an article about this, I prefer rock music but I respected her as an artist until now. I guess she was escorted to the VMAs by people discharged for DADT, she said "It is a devastation to me that I know my fans who are gay ... feel like they have governmental oppression on them. That's actually why I wore the meat tonight." Then she says to Ellen, "It's certainly no disrespect to anyone that's vegan or vegetarian. As you know, I am the most judgment-free human being on the earth. It has many interpretations, but for me this evening, it's 'If we don't stand up for what we believe in, we don't fight for our rights, pretty soon we're gonna have as much rights as the meat on our bones.' " She sounds like an idiot. She picked a controversial outfit (famewhore) and assigned some barely intelligible meaning to it.

Whatever tlsgirl said I completely second! I also thought it kinda looked like fabric, though...so was it actually real?

I don't necessarily think much of PETA's comment or PETA in general, but... damn, that is one DISGUSTING dress. I hope the meat was fake because it must have smelled terrible if otherwise.

PETA is too aggressive and its a shame because they have a good message. Sadly, the way they go about it totally turns me off to them. Also, if they feel so strongly about animals they should not have meat eating celebs do any of their campaigns. Oh, you won't wear fur but you'll eat it?? WTF. I rather wear fur and let someone else eat that nasty meat.

I called her a fame wh*re, not a wh*re wh*re. There's a difference.

Yeah I thought it was fake too. it is pretty gross.

PETA has a right to disagree with her statement (fashion or otherwise), but at least they were respectful. I cannot say the same for some of the responses on this thread. Trashing her looks ("yak face"? really?) or worse, calling her a whore, is the exact kind of disrespectful language that drove me away from the Sugar sites (and toward Jezebel). Women get enough of this language and treatment from men. We need not do it to each other. Criticize her music or her statements; do not resort to base attacks on sexuality and looks (the accusations of her gender are even more egregious and insulting. Grow up.).

I dislike PETA quite a bit. I feel like they put off more people who could be persuaded to care about their message than they attract and do a real disservice to vegetarians. However, I am completely disgusted by this so-called "outfit." Not only does it completely skeeve me out (seriously, I hoped Cher soaped herself up after hugging Gaga), but there are people who are starving to death in the world and she chooses to wear something like this. I was on my way out before, but she has completely lost me as a fan. What a wasteful fame wh*re.

I agree with weffie. I think all the adulation that Lady Gaga has received is pretty overrated. Sure, she's got insane ideas with all of her outfits but her music (which she so highly talks about) really leaves a lot to be desired. It's mediocre, at best. I mean, she's still relatively young so she may start writing better stuff but, EH, she's just so overrated. Her outfit? It's gross and it's been done before./END OF RANT.

Gross look. The comment from PETA comes off as melodramatic but what else is an animal right's group response supposed to be?

Meh, there are much better reasons to hate on Lady Gaga. Like, why doesn't PETA care about the poor yak that had to die to give her that face?! She's a clever businesswoman, but she has absolutely zero artistic merit and it's ridiculous how much undeserved acclaim she receives from her lame stunts.

So the people who didn't like the dress made of meat are the ones divorced from reality? I generally agree that peta marginalizes vegetarianism and is a negative force for animal rights, but I'm with them here.

Both the dress and the outrage have been done before.
