Pictures of Models With Beards at Patrick Mohr Show at German Fashion Week

Why Is It Hard to Look at a Woman With a Beard?

The Patrick Mohr show at German Fashion Week put expected gender appearances in a hairy predicament today. Some models walked the runway topless, but it was the lack of hair on their heads, replaced by hair on their faces, that caught the most attention.

Perhaps it's the bald heads set off with this wispy facial hair — which might not look so good on a man either — that makes the look unsettling. When French artist Jeanne Mordoj wore a beard out to bars in Paris, she got some positive feedback: many stared, but some men hit on her, intrigued by the unexpected hair on her face. She even felt more feminine, saying: "When I put on my beard, I feel my femininity so strongly, maybe even more than without it. I'll miss it."

Jeanne wanted to learn about the things women hide, like hair anywhere but on their heads, and found that a woman wearing a beard is both captivating and revolting. Do you think this runway show proves the same thing?

Women are not meant to have beards.

It grosses me out. It also grosses me out to see some women with armpit hair wearing tank tops. It just does. If I haven't shaved, I wear shirts with sleeves. But that's just me.

I can't believe some of the comments here. People are so reviled by women having body or facial hair of any kind. Women and men both have hair on their bodies. I understand that women are supposed to have less hair than men, but women do have hair albeit some more or less than others. It's undeniable and unavoidable. Yet we are so conditioned to think that it's wrong for women to not have hair on their bodies (although they do) and that it's normal for men. It's depressing that fellow women find each other revolting when they see them with hair. I must admit, I shave and wax, but only when hair gets too long and uncomfortable. I can't deny that I'm afraid of being ridiculed if I don't shave/wax. But when I see other women in public with obvious facial/body hair, I admire and commend them because they have a lot more courage.

I think they look pretty freaking cool. I love costume-y stuff. It's called uncanny: something that is familar and foreign.

Remember the beautiful Supermodels of the 90's and how they used to walk the runway??

I am with snarkypants. Looking unhealthily thin people creeps me out more than random hair. Their eyes look empty.

When it comes to bread on the face, I prefer baguettes. Except on days that I know I will encounter a revolving door. That doesn't work well.

Is it just me, or the lack of *ears* is even more disturbing than the whole lack of hairs/presence of beard thing?

Anything that shakes a person's foundation of "the way things are" is hard to look at. Though we have come to be more tolerating of gender bending behaviors, gender bending appearances are still out of the ordinary and thus throw us off.

I do not think hair on a woman's body is GROSS, to use another poster's word. I'd rather spend my life with friends and family who accept me as a hairy woman, than spend tons of money and time remaining hairless on every square inch of my body except my head and eyebrows. Waxing and laser hair removal are not cheap, and are not simple procedures. People need to stop being so blatantly judgmental when it comes to these things. There has never been a man in my life who thought my body fuzz was GROSS. Maybe women could learn a lesson from them.
