Rodney Alcala's Pictures From the '70s

NYPD Releases "Charming" Criminal's Photo Album From '70s

Yesterday the NYPD released over 200 photos of people, mostly women, in the 1970s. Some are beautiful and all are evocative, but that's to be expected from Roman Polanski-trained photographer Rodney Alcala. But Alcala is not just a photographer, he also has a genius-level IQ, was a 1978 contestant on The Dating Game, and is a convicted serial killer.

The photo subjects are not all, or even necessarily, victims, but police released the photos with the hope of cracking some cold cases. A nudge from the New York Daily News, which reported Tuesday that the police possessed the photos and demands from victims' relatives didn't hurt either. The cousin of a victim, Sheila Weller, who is writing a story about Alcala for Marie Claire, says the photos "should be in every newspaper, on TV, and on the Internet."

One woman saw her 19-year-old self in picture no. 169. She says she met Alcala on the Upper West Side in 1978, and he charmed her into a rooftop photo shoot.
