Sarah Palin on "Foreign Affairs Weekly" Cover: Funny Fake?

Sarah Palin on "Foreign Affairs Weekly" Cover: Funny Fake?

On Fox News this morning they compared this week's Us Weekly cover showing vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin next to the headline, "Babies, Lies, and Scandal," comparing it to the happy-couple Obama cover the mag ran a couple of months ago. The difference in cover treatment is stark to be sure.

Then I ran across this satire of the ubiquitous tabloid covers — the very fake Foreign Affairs Weekly (uh, I kind of wish this was a real mag) cover put together by the panopticist. With headlines like, "Putin: Best Beach Body," and hitting Palin hard with, "On China: "The governor's mansion has a beautiful set," is this an amusing lampoon, or one more liberal slight?

Scratch that. What was I thinking:? I'm sure the New Yorker just wanted a cover that would sell the most magazines and generate the most publicity...and I bet it did! I'm sure some people bought it for the cover alone. Its always nice to post on threads no one is reading anymore to ensure compliance ;)

Regarding the New Yorker's satire cover showing Obama ~ I'm sure those who love satire and could see the ridiculousness of the implication would laugh loudest, but those who, may rightly be afraid it would put the wrong ideas into people's heads affecting their vote, would find the humor poor judgement. There are voters out there who may even be illiterate who might have just seen the cover on a news stand which could unfortunately affect not only their vote but the votes of those entrusted to him....and then vote for the power/money-hungry duo. Its really not a contest on who is smart enough to understand the satire, but who is clever enough to sway the majority of voters.

I'm just here for the snapple and cupcakes. As a side note, I didn't think this was all that harsh, and I ALSO got the New Yorker's satire for what it was. At the end of the day, political humour is a natural way for people express themelves as well as let off a little steam, particularly as election days grow near. Its only natural that when the humour touches upon values we personally hold dear, or platform perspectives we personally disagree with, that we may not laugh quite so deeply. :P Its always been a part of the political process and has a long history in both the USA and Europe, and must be allowed to continue.
