Senator Gregg Withdraws Commerce Secretary Nomination

Click to Read

Senator Gregg Withdraws Commerce Secretary Nomination Republican Senator Judd Gregg has withdrawn his nomination for Commerce Secretary, on account of irresolvable conflicts with the Obama administration. Brought about by different views on the Census and the stimulus, Gregg's withdrawal reportedly blind-sided the White House. Gregg said: "I may have embarrassed myself. But hopefully not him."

A year ago this month, MCCAIN said he would balance the budget by 2013. Obama said he'd make no promises to balance the budget in his first term.

http://www.propublica.org/article/download-the-stimulus-bill-090213 You can read the bill at propublica AND it has charts showing the Senate version, the House's and the compromise.

Ahh G'pa, that revisionist spin would work if the rest of us hadn't watched the campaign as well. Bipartisanship never meant 'please come work for me and I will totally do your bidding' - you've lived long enough to know what bipartisan ship meant before the 1980s.

Right now they are planning on passing a record breaking 1,071 bill, that NO ONE in the house and Senate has read every part of. The lobbiests have more info on the final bill then our representitves.

Or politically inept and shooting itself in the foot with its poorly played political gamesmanship. Either interpretation works for me. ("I this" in comment 12 should be "I think")

While campaigning Obama, preached a balanced budget, and that every new program would be paid for. When the right wingers accused Obama, of not being truthful, and that he was going to put us into massive debt through new and expanded programs, The Dems and the MSM excoriated them calling them "scare mongers". Maybe Gregg, took Obama at his word, and accepted that he would be faithful to those promises, particularly that NEW ERA of bipartisanship, that there would be transparency that all new bills would be published in full at least five days in advance of any vote, so that the people could read and comment on the proposed bill. Is that a possibility?

well the savior is never wrong, reaching out for peace and love, its the "other" side that is evil as always.

I this that most people understand that if Obama really didn't want to be bi-partisan, he wouldn't keep publicly reaching out to people who publicly slap him away - and that the problem must be coming from the receiving end of the offer.

That is what I heard as well, Mydiadem. That he expressed interest in the position. And that during the interview process he repeatedly stated he would support the President and his policies.

I'm also reading he campaigned for the job, its not like Obama picked him out of thin air.

I heard him on NPR and he said that the stimulus and census were two examples but that it wasn't just those two things, but rather a fundemental difference in beliefs. And after 30 years in government he had to be true to himself. So it seems he might have had an idea that a democrat might have a different belief system than him before yesterday. But I could be wrong.

Roar, did you read the paragraph "Brought about by different views on the Census and the stimulus" the stimulus hasnt been on the table for two years.

I don't understand where Gregg has been for the past two years that he just figured out yesterday that his beliefs didn't match up with Obama or his administration. He should be embarassed.

I think Obamas will need a new slogan.... Maybe instead of Hope and Change it could just simply be "Another one bites the dust"

Taking the responsibility from Commerce and moving it to the White house, only after Gregg was nominated was crass politics; Obama was in effect telling Greg, "I can't trust you to do the right thing”. It was a stupid blunder and a slap in the face of Gregg. Anyone in a similar situation with an ounce of integrity would and should do the same thing.

I feel as though the republican party is set on trying to embarrass this administration.
