Shorter Men Need to Earn More to Compete With Taller Men When Dating

Short Men Need to Earn More to Attract Women

Tom Cruise is a lucky man. Surely, he's never needed to resort to the Internet for a date, but his sizable bank account would redeem what he lacked in height if he had to.

Dan Ariely, a behavioral economist at Duke University and author of The Upside of Irrationality, used online dating statistics to determine short men need to earn more to compete with taller men in the dating world. In fact, a man who is 5'9" needs to make between $35,000 and $40,000 more per year than a man who is one inch taller to get as many responses on dating sites. Too bad short men earn less!

Quantifying inches may be a hard sell, but study after study paints an unromantic picture for shorter men. Nearly half of us said we would not date a guy who's shorter; however, women may face the harshest judgments. A high body mass index is our empty inbox, and not money, education, or a brilliant list of five things that can't be lived without seem to counteract that.

I have to disagree with the article. It doesn't matter to me if a guy is short or tall; I look at his heart. I met a guy back in May who happens to be shorter than I am, and who doesn't make a lot of money. From that first meeting, he and I have looked at each other's hearts instead of our outer appearances. (I happen to be physically handicapped.) The fact that he takes the time to see my heart means more to me than riches ever could. I have yet to meet a tall guy who would take that time.

I'm 5'4'', my husband is 6'8'' I have always liked guys who are taller/bigger than myself. It just has always worked out that way.

I disagree, Anon 9. Some people just have preferences. I, personally, am not attracted to shorter men. Just like I am not attracted to blonde men. And some dudes are just boob men, it doesn't necessarily mean they are shallow. I have a small chest and have known this to be a factor in some men not reciprocating my interest. So, no big deal, I just go find myself a butt man! Personal preferences should not always be equated to shallowness. Having preferences and being shallow are two totally different things. MissAujah, I agree with you that Sugar has mostly negative things to say about shorter men. There's a lot of positive things about not being tall :)

At least women can lose weight. If a guy's short, there's absolutely nothing he can do about it. I've yet to meet a man that's shorter than me, I know they exist, but I've never met one. I'm am more attracted to tall guys regardless. Maybe because my body doesn't want to have teeny children? That said, my husband's pretty short and had no money when we met. Tall and rich are good, but certainly don't outweigh the other stuff.

Same here -- I'm petite. Most men I ever met were taller than me, with the exception of two. These two men were diminutive, and yes, for me it was a turn-off, as they were not my type. Tiny men are not my type, sorry.

One of the few perks of being short is that most men you'll date will be taller than you, so I don't really have that problem. On the contrary, I like men to be between 5'7 and 5'9.
