Soldier Gets Seven-Month Sentence In Iraq Murder Case

Click to Read

Soldier Gets Seven-Month Sentence in Iraq Murder Case A US soldier pleaded guilty to conspiracy to murder and was sentenced to seven months in prison Thursday in the deaths of four Iraqis. The relatively lenient sentence for Spc. Belmor Ramos was part of a deal that will see him testify against others alleged to have been involved. The four unidentified Iraqi men were bound, blindfolded, shot in the head, and dumped in a Baghdad canal, killings prosecutors said were in retribution for casualties in Ramos's unit at the time.

I've never heard an execution described as a mistake before. The role of the allies is to liberate the Iraqi people, this doesn't do a great deal to gain their trust.

Exactely, they don't all do it. In fact, the vast majority don't do it. This guy made a mistake most likely caused by the trauma of war. I don't like that he did it, but I'm not going to condem him because of it. He needs help, and should get it as quickly as possible

Americans are outraged by this, not other countries. It doesn't matter if other people do it too. Most of the time, if Citizen runs a crime story, you say the offenders should get the maximum sentence. What makes it different if the guy's wearing a uniform? Every soldier over there is under stress and they don't all execute people.

The point is that there should be a much harsher sentence given

I'm not saying we should excuse it, but let's not believe that this is going to damage our reputation with countries that truthfully look at their own militaries and realize that their soldiers have committed similar actions. Any country that is outraged by this is just looking for something to be angry about.

Everybody does it? Where have I heard that before?
UnDave35 UnDave35 7 years
Yeah, cause we are the only people that do this. No other country has armies that have soldiers in that army make mistakes...

And the US wonders why they are considered war mongers in so many parts of the world. The images from Abu Graib and now the farce of this sentence will certainly compound that view.

I'm glad this guy isn't going to be hung out to dry for this. It's an unfortunate occurance that goes along with war. I hope he gets the help he needs when he gets back home.

It is heartbreaking when you try and think of all the lives the war in Iraq has taken, all the lives it has ruined, all the families that have been permanently scarred if not torn apart. Now most people in the U.S. believe it was the wrong thing to do. And no one who manipulated us into it will spend five minutes in jail for it.

I find this really troubling. I know that we are at war, and I can understand the emotions behind these killings, but murder is murder, and I hope that most soldiers who murder Iraqis don't also receive such lenient treatment just because of their status and the nationality of their victims. That's not the way to lessen the problems we're facing in that region.

Let's hope the others get longer sentences than someone who commits minor theft...
