Planning a wedding is no joke, and aside from scouring online resources like Pinterest and POPSUGAR for ideas and advice, you should also consider attending a wedding fair. It's a typically inexpensive (tickets often cost around $25) way to talk face to face with a large number of potential vendors at once — which gives you a better feel for whether you'd like to hire them than just online communication does — as well as experiencing their offerings firsthand. You can see their table designs for yourself, taste their food, and see what their dresses look like on real people. It's also really fun to bring along your mom and/or bridesmaids for some prewedding bonding, especially since these events are known to have lots of sweet treats and appetizers to taste, Champagne and cocktails to sip, free goodies and swag bags, raffle prizes, hands-on DIYs, dancing, and fashion shows.
I recently participated in the Something Blue boutique wedding event in Palo Alto, CA — founded and curated by Karla Randolph, aka The Card Lady, to "empower women through beauty and style" — by judging a DIY kit challenge and interviewing attendees and vendors about their wedding plans, their advice, and, of course, their something blue. The evening featured Sprinkles cupcakes, pink cocktails, dance lessons, floral crown making, raffles, and enough peonies and sequins to set your heart aflutter. And the best part? Proceeds benefited 31 Bits, a socially conscious jewelry company that provides opportunities for impoverished women in Northern Uganda.
