How much should I be spending on a sweet 16 gift for a girl? The family is going out of hand and spending like $160 a head so I don't want to be cheap. When I was 16, I got gifts that were under $100 but I know times have changed. Worried About Inflation Alison
Dear Worried About Inflation Allison
I know, times really have changed - I had a karaoke party when I turned 16 - not a fancy sit down dinner. I think anything from $50-$100 from a single person is fair and reasonable. Something to consider is not giving money if you are concerned about the amount. If she is going to be dressing up for other sweet 16's this year, how about getting her a piece of jewelry? Something tasteful but elegant like; pearl earrings, a pendant, a bracelet with her initials on them or heart or love knot silver or gold earrings? Other non-jewelry ideas are; a gift certificate for itunes, an ipod adapter for her car (if she'll be getting her license soon), an ipod/mp3 shower radio, a subscription to a few magazines, a massage or a beautiful silk or leather photo album to capture the pictures from her party.
