Front Page: Pakistan Moves to Impeach, Jobless Claims Hit 6-Year High, Death Toll in Afghanistan Passes Milestone

  • Pakistan Moves to Impeach:
The ruling coalition in Pakistan agreed today to begin impeachment proceedings against President Pervez Musharraf. It's a development expected to heighten political instability in the country. A senior official, and member of the party of the late Benazir Bhutto said, "yes, we have agreed in principle to impeach him," and that the parliament's lower house, is expected to be called next week to begin proceedings Musharraf.
  • Jobless Claims Hit 6-Year High:
The government has announced that the number of people signing up for unemployment benefits has reached its highest point in more than six years. The Labor Department reported that claims rose by a seasonally adjusted 7,000 to nearly half a million. The government points to a program locating those eligible for benefits as the cause for the rise.

  • Death Toll in Afghanistan Passes Milestone:
The death toll for Operation Enduring Freedom centered in Afghanistan has surpassed 500. As troop levels reached their highest level of deployment in the last month and casualties exceeded those of Iraq, Afghanistan has been brought to the forefront. The New York Times has an interactive feature showing the pictures and names of those in the 500, a graph of the growing toll, as well as number of deaths by service.

Globalization is re-distributing the wealth worldwide so things are going to be different. That doesn't mean they'll be worse. Hypno's probably right that a good way to revitalize places likely will be to come up with green or forward looking industries and get it going before someone else dominates it.

Sorry Stilletta! I didn't mean to increase your anxiety! I can't help but feel it myself these days. I am really noticing the dominoes falling as a result of recent economic challenges. There are for rent and for sale signs everywhere, stores are going out of business, restaurants, banks...I am doing fine now, but there are so many indirect victims, I just don't think anyone is that secure. But that is life I guess! There will be ups and downs. :drinks:

I always think, "my job is stable" but I bet a lot of people who get laid off think that.

There was a large company my friend worked at. There used to be 10 people on their HR staff. They let 8 people go, and now there is 2. They used to think they were pretty stable, especially since it is such a large company. Times they are a changin'.

I really feel our country is going into more of a decline, although I'm really not affected at all. My job is really secure (about 8+ years). I really hope the next President will do something about our economic status. I hope Pakistan can find the leadership they need to be successful, and still be an ally to the U.S.

I'm starting to get nervous about my job too. I hear whisperings in the office and the conference room just got booked for two weeks starting Monday. That can't be good.

Crazy stuff in Patkistan! Ugh. I think we would be better off with someone doing a better job over there, but I feel like things are going to get really ugly. The unemployment rate is crazy. I have a feeling shelters are going to need more help than ever this winter with people losing their houses and their jobs. Sigh.
