Transgender Homecoming Queen

Transgender Teen Makes Homecoming History

This past Friday night at a homecoming game in Huntington Beach, CA, the news wasn't just about the football score. During halftime, 16-year-old Cassidy Lynn Campbell — who was born a boy named Lance — was crowned homecoming queen at Marina High School.

The transgender teen was understandably shocked and happy, saying it wasn't just a big moment for her, but for so many LGBT teens around the nation. Cassidy has always been open about her transformation, documenting the three-year process on Twitter and in YouTube videos.

After her win, she immediately faced backlash on social media, and although she's been hurt by the comments, she says she's trying not to take them too seriously.

After all, she said, "I just think it is such a huge step for the transgender community. The majority at my school wanted me to win. So many people embraced me and accept me for who I am. I think that is pretty profound."

Cassidy's not the first transgender girl to win homecoming queen in the country, but she still made history as the first in Orange County, CA.
