US Strike Kills 78 Afghans, Afghan President Says Most Were Civilians Scores of Afghan civilians who had gathered in a small village for the memorial ceremony of a militia commander were killed when US and Afghan soldiers launched an attack in the middle of the night, officials and villagers said Saturday. President Hamid Karzai condemned the early Friday operation in western Afghanistan and said most of the dead were civilians. The US coalition, however, said it believed only five civilians were among those killed.

No, we don't just fire into the crowd, or shoot randomly. The point is the "innocent" civilians are going to get caught in the crossfire because the enemy is choosing to put them in harms way. The civilians have two choices. They can either get out of the city for a few days, and let us do our job, they can take up arms and fight with (or against) us, or they can do nothing, and hope that no one from either side shoots them. From what I've been told, there aren't many civilians in that region that are not on the side of the terrorists who would like to see America smoldering.

So we just shoot randomly and hope for the best. Helluva a way to win the general population over to our way of thinking. How do we know when we've hit actual terrorists and how will we know when we're done?

And since the terrorists are hiding among the "civilians" and not wearing any sort of uniform, It's difficult to distinguish between the two.

The trouble is, we always downplay the number of civilians killed so anyone interested has to read as many stories as possible, consider the sources cited in each story and draw their own conclusions.
