US Troop Casualties In Iraq Lowest Since Invasion
Nineteen US soldiers were killed in Iraq in May, the US military said on Sunday, the lowest monthly death toll since US forces invaded to topple Saddam Hussein in 2003. The number of Iraqi civilians killed in the same month plunged to 505 after reaching a seven-month high of 968 in April, figures obtained by Reuters from Iraq's interior, defense and health ministries showed.

stephley,I'm sure there is a certain amount of incidents of this nature blown out of proportion, but I'm certain that this happened. They were protesting the war near Camp Pendleton and whenever a bus of Marines was coming or going they would chuck their bags of "special presents" at it.Normally I would agree and think that behavior of that sort has to be a fluke, but I went to Berkeley when Code Pink was protesting the USMC recruiting office and witnessed firsthand behavior of that caliber directed at veterans and their families. Although Berkeley seems to be stuck in a time warp so don't think I paint everyone who's anti-war with that brush.cabaker,"I think you can disagree with why we went but still admit to the good things that are happening."I absolutely agree! That's kind of how I feel about it.

Rac I don't think that agreeing with why we went and seeing how we've made progress are mutually exclusive.I think you can disagree with why we went but still admit to the good things that are happening.Kinda like how people can disgaree with the war and still support the troops... I guess I just don't think you can't have one without the other...

well, can't you import a proper graphic from another website and have it turned into an emoticon? do universities have emoticons, maybe Virginia Woolf on skis?

While I won't discount what may possibly be a first-hand experience, I will tell you that there actually is at least one book and a number of articles written on reports of Vietnam vets being spat upon when they returned - there's very little evidence that it happened. On Slate.com, in its Press Box:Media Criticism section, Jack Schaeffer has actually been tracking stories for a while and talked with one vet last year, after finding video of him discussing a first-hand incident from 1971. Several relatives are military and were definitely active in that period: I've heard talk of confrontations with anti-war protestors but at or around protests, not spontaneous attacks on the street.

The real problem I have is putting them in the context of my comment. When I make a really angry comment to someone, I always pontificate it with a stupid emoticon which afterwards just comes off as stupid. For instance: "I find your callous approach to neoliberal broadbased economic policies in Latin American ignorant at best and negligent at worst!" :moo: See? That makes no sense! Why a cow when discussing foreign economic policies? But when I type in :Johnmaynardkeynes: ... see? Nothing? Then I just look stupid.

This is a good time to get in some emoticon practice while everyone's asleep. I've got the threads pretty much to myself. :yaar: :bunny: :gift:

Actually, Stephley, it's you I have a problem with now. While we are here debating you are off cooking. It would be nice of you to show a little more commitment to this ... to us ... Do you want to be a commenter or do you want to be cook. Time to step up, Steph! :amish: As for throwing human waste on your own soldiers ... I would support someone being tried for treason for doing that. Seriously. :fish: Okay, these emoticons are seriously getting out of hand. I don't even know what they mean. Why amish? And a fish? What the hell?

I understand. But don't get me started on the Vietnam protesters... a vet I know told me that they would fill plastic bags with urine and feces and throw it on the soldiers returning from Nam. I don't mind that you're against the war, but for the love of God please don't start acting like that. ;)

You know, when I see all the footage from the protests during Vietnam I used to think "Wow, those people really were angry." And now I understand why. I find myself writing on this site things I would never think possible to complete strangers. I suppose the anonymity of this makes it easy to sound disrespectful or smug, but really I don't mean to. I respect you and your opinion and am truly sorry if I offended you.

That's fine. But, I never called your patriotism into question, raciccarone. I'm glad you at least have an opinion you're willing to debate. A lot of people (on both sides) aren't willing to go there.

Look, I'm sorry your father is over there, that must be hard. But you are sorely missing my point, Bellum. We disagree on this war. You think we should stay, I think we need to leave. It's that simple. Let's not call each other's patriotism into question because that's not what this is about. My point is that sending good soldiers after dead ones does not make sense if the war in question is not viable and there is no strategy for ending it. As I said, we're not going to see eye to eye on this so let's just drop it.

And here's what you wrote:"Only 19 American soldiers dead in May?! That's fantastic! I am sure those 19 families are soooo happy that the numbers are done! Great job!"Nothing about disagreeing with the war, just a smug comment about the families of men and women who have died on behalf of this ENTIRE country, not just the ones who agree with the war. I have family serving and happen to find it offensive."So more soldiers should die so the ones that have already died will not be in vain? That is the logic of lemming running off a cliff because the ones before them jumped."And that kind of supports my point. If my father thought his death over there would mean nothing then he would not have volunteered to go back. What makes you think you know better than him?

Never mind. Look, you guys think it's a great we went into Iraq, I don't. We'll never see eye to eye, so let's just drop it. I won't be called unpatriotic for not supporting this war.

Really? Are you serious? You think this is a good thing that we did? In 2008? Your government falsified evidence, turned the media into a propaganda machine and sent out soldiers into battle to secure oil fields for the wealthiest few and you believe it's a good thing?
