Yes, it really does happen in TEXAS. My daughter competes in the mutton bustin'. She's been doing it for about 3 years now. This is a picture of one of her rides. It's hard to get good pictures during such fast action. I don't think it hurts the sheep if they enforce the weight limits of the kids who are riding. Many rodeos will not let the kids use spurs, but some rodeos do. My daughter has only used spurs once and it made the sheep run resulting in a higher score for her. The only reason she chose to wear the spurs was because she was told ahead of time that the sheep had been walking and would not run. They are scored like the bull riders 50 pts for the rider, 50 pts for how well the sheep runs. You want the sheep to run.

That's hilarious that some of the people actually thought this was photoshopped... nah, down south and in rural areas young country kids do this for sport.

Ugh, that looks painful for everyone involved. And what the hell is that surface bellow them? Please tell me it's, like, feathers or something, and not sheep fuzz from the last rodeo. Cuh-razy. http://alexrichards.org

I've seen this at rodeos. I worry about the kids getting hurt. Not that I'm not sympathetic to the animals, I am.

Thanks, Mandy and Asrai. I love that our readers from all over can actually explain some of the mysteries I put up here on GiggleSugar. I kinda wish it weren't true, too...but hopefully that kid doesn't weigh too much...

Hey, I'm from Texas and here its called "Mutton Bustin'". It's definitely real... I went to a rodeo recently and I watched the little competition. I'm not exactly for it, but the kids seem to enjoy it... I just thought I'd clear that up.

I'm totally anti-rodeo, it's not fun for the animals at all and some of it is really abusive. This type of kids competition happens all the time in Canada, especially in Alberta.

It's what the kids of cowboys do before they can ride bulls. Seriously. They also ride calves. I don't know if it ever came to be but there was talk in Canada of a age limit after a 9 year old boy was killed during practice.
