Where Do You Stand? Guys Buying You Clothes

On a list boldly titled 25 Skills Every Man Should Know, the May issue of Esquire offers advice for men looking to buy clothing for women. The tools required: a credit card and a woman's clothing size. The steps, according to the article:

  1. Don't.

Ha! Clearly the mag has a pretty immovable position on whether guys should buy women clothing as gifts, but is it justified? I'll admit, I've gotten some pretty terrible gifts from guys that I then felt obligated to wear, but I've also had boyfriends who were great at picking out my style. So what's your take? Is it always a terrible idea for men to buy women clothes?

As a man who has picked out a good deal of my wife's coolest/cutest/sexiest outfits, I've got to say "it all depends on the guy".Hey my wife and I get our hair cut by a straight guy and he's frickin' fabulous. Saying all guys suck at buying close is on the level of saying womencan't be into cars or sports. Seriously wtf!I've got to agree that I do tend to gravitate toward sexier/sluttier looks for my wife at times (within reason) of course especially when itcomes to SHOES. I think I like shoes more than my wife does LOL.But there's a fine line between cute sexy and slutty tacky.Clear heels belong in the bedroom! (if any where at all)Here's what I do:Pick out multiple shoes/outfits that my wife can try on stress freeand take back anything she doesn't like! Easy peasy japaneasy!Because even the cutest outfit might not look right on you/sizes differ by brand, etc etc.Or we go together. There should be NO obligation to like something he got just becausehe got it.

My brother in law is great at buying my sister clothes! He has a great eye for fashion & I'm always impressed with the things he gets for her :)

I would never have this problem because my boyfriend doesn't even like shopping for his own underwear. He did buy me some fabulous shoes for Christmas that were my size and taste, so I would have to take him on a test run first and ask him to keep the receipt just in case.

Um, no. Sweet gesture and all, but the type of men I generally date don't give a crap about fashion. They always know how to dress themselves, but they're not concerned with what other people are wearing. I prefer it that way. I'd rather he give me something sentimental and meaningful, not something that will end up at Goodwill.

My dad is surprisingly really amazing when it comes to buying clothing for my mom for xmas and stuff. I was very impressed the past few years. He knows her style and what looks perfect on her (and no, he isn't Metro, he's a piney plumber from south NJ... hahaha, and my mom dresses very nice, professional- yet casual, very 30 year old business woman, even though shes in her 40s).My boyfriend, on the other hand, HATES shopping, so I would never expect him to buy something for me, let alone himself! Hah.

My husband can't get it right. He's tried several times & failed miserably. So I have to agree with Esquire on this one. Don't

My boyfriend is excellent at picking out clothes for me. The first two things he bought for me I really thought I would hate when I saw them on the hanger--but when I put them on, it was AMAZING! Now I practically beg him to buy me clothes since I really hate shopping for things I have to try on. His style is so much better than mine (don't tell him I said that!)I would definitely NOT let him get away with getting me a gift card!

My SO does buy the occasional outfit and he does well. He gets the correct size but we usually go shop together. He's getting a better sense of my style and he does pick good jewelery.

my boyfriend loves my style so he'll just give good opinions about how things look on me or if he likes them.......... he also knows I love wearing HIS clothes so he's generous with lending them :)

My boyfriend is a tshirt & jeans everyday kind of guy, and I like to look a little more dressy.. so no, I wouldn't want him buying me clothing. He does pay attention to what I wear and what I like though, so maybe I'm just being quick to judge. I would just hate for him to buy me something awful & have to tell him I don't like it.

I wouldnt complain if my partner decided to gift me with clothing. But I'd prefer it if we went shopping together.

I prefer if someone wants to buy me clothes that they just take me out. We can work together to find something we both like, something that fits, and it's a blast all around. 'Suprise' is nice on gifts, but sharing the whole process is nice too!
