Who Is Your Favorite Powerful Woman of 2009?

Nancy Pelosi, Hillary Clinton, and newly appointed Supreme Court justice Sonia Sotomayor were some of the most powerful people in US politics this year. Overseas, 83-year-old Queen Elizabeth II continued her reign as the oldest living monarch in British history by counseling the prime minister and welcoming foreign guests ranging from the Obamas to Lady Gaga. Meanwhile, Germany's Angela Merkel represented women on the international stage as the only female head of state in the G8.

Of course politicians don't hold all the power. Oprah Winfrey continued to influence people around the world (and will for another year at least), while Tyra Banks tried to become the next big thing by working her brand and influence. And while Marissa Mayer might not be a household name, as the head of search at Google, she probably has the biggest impact on our everyday lives. Whether you like her or not how does Sarah Palin not have a spot and Tyra does? Please inform me how she is more powerful than Palin. The rude, name calling comments are just proof how much she gets the liberal left in a fury. Palin has a NYT bestseller, so OBVIOUSLY some people in America relate to her, maybe not on every level. When she was on Oprah her ratings were PHENOMENAL. Just because you don't agree with someone's views does not mean you have to get caught up in the dogma and not recognize their role in American society. I am certainly no fan of Pelosi, but she is a dang powerful person in the DC circuit.

Queenie's lookin crazy...but, since I'm in the UK, she gets my vote. I mean, anyone who lets a photo like THAT get released...gotta give it to her.

I picked Sotomayor... but Pelosi, Clinton, and Merkel were all considerations. Although I'm a raving liberal, I truly wish that there were more Republican women representin' (who are not completely ridiculous like Palin or Michelle Bachmann).

Oh man, and that photo they picked of Hillary just blows away the competition.

tyra banks? really, does not even compare to the other women on the list. i chose marissa (not just b/c we have the same name) but b/c i think it's cool that she made it to the top of an industry that is so often seen as a nerdy male only field. she's pretty and she's smart and that is definitely something young girls can look up to.

Um wait, what? Lady Gaga's "message?" I like Lady Gaga as much as the next person, but her "message?" Are you kidding me?

Oh my god, it is so offensive that Tyra Banks is on this list and tying with Sonia Sotomayor! My vote was for Hillary, but Sotomayor would be a close second.

SKG I could kiss you on the lips for that comment, and I VERY much agree -- I was at her show in NYC in May and wrote something she said on my arm (I was having a liiiiitle bit of fun..) and have since re-written on paper at my house and at my office -- "All we need is love, art, and each other."
