Wild West! 22% Think States Have Right to Secede—Some Did!

Ride 'em cowboys! Here's a little poll for you state's rights-ers out there: a new Zogby poll shows that one in five Americans believe that any state or region has the right to "peaceably secede from the United States and become an independent republic." Those in the South and East agreed a little stronger with the notion of ditching the "United" part (perhaps because they've done it before?) and young people agreed with the notion much more strongly — 40 percent of them in fact.

It's one thing to believe in it — but would they support an secession effort by their state? Yup, 18 percent would buy in, with another 10 percent not being sure.

Though the South Carolina secession could be the most famous historical example of breaking away, the Times has a smashing tale of a rogue state fantasy of rebels in 1939 to grab chunks of Wyoming, South Dakota, and Montana to form a new state, Absaroka. The plan was complete with license plates, a Miss Absaroka 1939, and a visit from a foreign King (of Norway.)

If this tale, combined with the fact that 22 percent believe a state can secede — should the US be fearing for the union? Would you support an effort to secede?

Hey Jude, I think Dave's got it right. It's not about setting up or limiting parties. While I think it'd be great to do away with parties and just run on principles, I highly doubt that would actually happen, but I would not push for the creation of parties just for the purpose of having multiple parties. If someone feels the need to create and/or run on another platform, then more power to them.Steph, as for those in the state, they are free to come or go. The choice is theirs (even if they aren't conservative.)

I agree. I think we should probably get together and decide which groups of people we were going to kick out of both countries...

There'd probably be a serious population trade.

I wouldn't throw anyone out, but wouldn't prevent anyone from leaving either.

You are going to take the people currently living in your states with you aren't you? It's not very democratic to secede and throw out anyone you don't like.

I think we should have an opposition party, so we have someone to poke fun at. (JK)I am guessing that we won't need to officially designate two parties. That may happen over time, but I wouldn't encourage it. IMO the two party system is one of the sources of our problems. If you want to run, you have to buy into the ideals of the party, which you may or may not fully subscribe to.

The Six Flags in St. Louis is the best, hands down! But at least we get to keep SeaWorld San Diego. :pSo I assume you guys will be governing according to classic conservative principles, rather than neocon ideology? :)And what will you do about elections? Are you going to have an opposition party, or just do away with the two-party system, or what? I'm curious!

Yeah, if you have Cedar Point, you don't really need anything else.

I like that Lain. As for amusements parks, we'll have the best. Not only will we have WDW, we'll also have the 6 flags chain, Kings Island (outside Cincinati, OH), and Cedar Point, the best theme park in the country.
