Woodward: "Surge" Not Solely Responsible For Decline in Iraq Violence In the Summer of 2007, the high of 1,550 attacks a week fell below 800 — nearly a 50 percent reduction. It has continued to fall over the past year. Why did the violence drop so dramatically? In Washington, conventional wisdom translated these events into a simple view: The surge had worked. But the full story was more complicated. At least three other factors were as important as, or even more important than, the surge. These factors either have not been reported publicly or have received less attention than the influx of troops.

I honestly don't think anyone believes that the surge is fully responsible for success in Iraq; that would be foolish. In my opinion, it would also be foolish to deny that the surge had something to do with the recent success in Iraq.

Exactly Jude. I wonder if this will stop the Katie Courics and Bill O'Reillys of the world of trying to force Obama into saying he was wrong and the surge is the reason for success in Iraq. I doubt it.

It shouldn't surprise anyone that the real story is much more complicated than the simpleminded pap that passes as conventional wisdom.

The real story is a lot less heroic and a lot more troubling than the surge mythology.
