Would You Send Your Child To College in New Orleans This Fall?

School starts in about a week at the renown Tulane University (among many other colleges). In the wake of Katrina's year anniversary, given its geographic location, and the state of the city of New Orleans right now, things are certainly not the same as they once were for college students in years past. The school has stated that students will be sent away if there is even so much as a level II storm warning. Would you feel comfortable sending your child to school in New Orleans this fall?

My husband and I do not have any kids, but we are both from New Orleans. I would definitely let my kids go to school there. If nothing else, most of our families still live there. The crime is an issue, but in all honesty, it is starting to move into Jefferson Parish instead of Orleans Parish, now. I would give my kids the same advice that I would've given them pre-Katrina. You always have to be aware of your surroundings, and be smart. The crime is bad, but no city is immune. In reality, New Orleans has ALWAYS had its problems. Katrina just exposed them to the rest of the country.

I wouldn't send my kid there, only b/c I don't think it should be rebuilt.

it doesn't have to do with my child's safety! it has to do with the fact that tulane did not give refunds for tuition to those students who had already paid and who were not able to complete schooling at tulane for the year.

My biggest concern about sending my kids to school in New Orleans would be that they wouldn't GO TO SCHOOL. LOL I wouldn't. No, I think crime is a very big issue there right now. That would concern me more than storm safety.

My husband is convinced that both of our sons will go to college at LSU and then play pro football with the Saints. LOL Not quite my dream for them, and he's just playing with them, but honestly...I wouldn't have a problem with it. They'll have grandparents nearby to keep them in line and a safe place to evacuate to should something like Katrina happen again. :)

None of my kids have considered going there, but it would mostly be their choice. The safety concern, for me, exists no matter where they choose to go to school. I think the biggest concern about New Orleans would probably be health related. I'm concerned about the risks related to mold. I lived in Gulfport, MS for a short time and visited NO a couple of times - mostly to go drinking on Bourbon Street. I loved the atmosphere and that you could walk from club to club. I never really did enjoy the ride back home though - If ya know what I mean.

I love New Orleans, but with the beauty there has always been danger. I never had a problem personally but I was always alert if I went out of the French Quarter or found myself on the fringes of it. A friend of my sister's was stabbed to death during a mugging after refusing to hand over his wallet in 1997. A friend of mine was chased by a gang of men when he left his hotel to go jogging a few years back. So has the Katrina disaster made things better or worse as far as safety goes with a criminal element? Do we even need to start on the dangers of the weather alone? If I had college age kids, I would probably not send them there. Too many factors of danger for young people.
