Is It Wrong For GOP to Use Barack Obama's Middle Name?

Supporters of the McCain-Palin ticket have been energizing the base by referring to the opponent as "Barack Hussein Obama." At a campaign rally yesterday, the GOP official who introduced McCain and Palin twice used the Democrat's full name, Barack Hussein Obama. After the event, the McCain campaign said it didn't condone such rhetoric. This was the second time this week "Hussein" has been dropped at a McCain event.

The controversy around Barack's middle name raises a bunch of questions. Since it is Obama's given middle name, perhaps there's nothing wrong with using it. Then again, the spirited response from the McCain crowds reminds us that "Hussein" is more than just a middle name, it is a signal that Barack is somehow "different" — and different can scare voters. Hoping to quell false perceptions, Obama has released a biographical ad, highlighting his all-American story.
