After a 10-year run, the charmingly irreverent Jane magazine called it quits in August 2007.
Radar magazine had a rocky decade. It launched in 2003, only to be no-go. Then it returned in 2005 and shuttered the same year, but not without one more life. The sex, scandal, and politics magazine began its last and longest run in 2006. It folded in 2008, and I was less than pleased when my subscription was replaced with Star magazine.
On the eve of its 16th anniversary, Vibe folded on June 30, 2009. As hip hop crossed over into mainstream, the magazine's success lied in its ability to attract demographically diverse readers.
Budget Living made being cheap aspirational. The magazine itself had thrifty beginnings, launching independently without the backing of a major publisher. After four years and several award wins, BL folded in 2006. I can't help but think if it made it past the boom years, its chic-on-the cheap point of view would be a boon today.
InStyle Weddings may have only been a quarterly magazine, but that's not to say it won't be missed. Especially if you have a wedding to plan! It's not entirely over yet, though, the last issue hit stands Dec. 25 and will remain there until March.
OK, so maybe you haven't read YM since high school (no judgment if you have!), but it was a teenage institution. The meaning of its initials changed from Young Miss to Young and Modern, but that didn't keep it fresh enough for this century. After 72 years, it folded and subscribers began receiving Teen Vogue.
Music magazine Blender began in 1994, not in print but on a CD-ROM. It wasn't long before it became glossy because who would read a magazine on a screen! Once in print, it made cover girls and boys out of pop singers and had a solid 15-year run. It folded this year, with its last issue published in April.
After 68 years Gourmet printed its last issue in October. The magazine had been shrinking in size for some time, but few saw its demise coming because of its highfalutin status in the food world. I loved Gourmet for its simple covers, mouthwatering photography, and ability to bring gourmet to the every day.
