i did not hear his whole speech. but i read something about him saying that as a nation we need to tell our children to be more competitive toward other countries. i tell me kids that their success does not depend on the failure of others. if they always do their best then that's all anyone can ask of them. and i do agree that science is at least as important as sports. i think there is too much emphasis on WINNING, and who's number 1. even the super bowl team that loses is made out like a bunch of losers. a shame that the effort is not recognized the way achievement is. there are certain things that come easier to some people. do they deserve the same accolades as everyone else? i don't think so. and then have an assembly to honor the kids who got straight a's. hello, your straight a report card WAS your honor. not everything deserves a plaque. kids need to do their best just for themselves, no one else. all this posturing and posing is like an MTV moment.
