10 Reasons Having a Baby Makes Life Better

Having a baby changes a mom's life, but the bundle of joy also alters the way she looks at the world and lives each day. Here are some of the purest perks that come with being a mother.

  1. You see everything for the first time again through the child's eyes — even ants are amazing.
  2. A single gummy smile can save even the biggest wreck of a day.
  3. When the infant fusses, your mere presence calms him.
  4. If you rest your child on your chest, your hearts beat in unison.
  5. When he laughs, he shakes, drools, and almost keels over, but it's the most adorable thing you've ever seen. So you make him do it again and again.
  6. You think about the future in bigger and brighter ways. You picture him heading off to kindergarten and graduating from high school.
  7. You anticipate and even dream of little things like a cutting tooth, a single step, or a two syllable utterance: "mama."
  8. You forget about things you used to care so much about, because they actually don't matter at all.
  9. You finally understand what "a mother's instinct" means.
  10. Your will to live intensifies because you don't want to miss a moment of your child's spectacular life.

Kids are just "better than TV." I remembering playing on the floor for hours with my girls before they could even sit up. The most sedentary fun a woman could have. That photo is adorable!

i have to say that this is so true. my favorite moments are in the morning when i'm supposed to be getting ready for work and instead i take one of the twins out of their bassinet and just snuggle for a few minutes. that's the best part of my day!

I agree with everything but number 9. I think it's really important not to just blow off all of your previous interests and concerns. Yes, a lot of them seem really silly and superficial after, but you cared about them for some reason or another. I changed radically after my daughter was born, but all of my core cares/interests haven't changed in the least, I just added new ones and let go of a lot of worries. Number one is SO true though, lol. The first time she experienced a bug, a small one crawling on her hand, literally stopped me, my husband, and my mother in our tracks. We watched her play with it and experience it for a good 5 minutes. It's just absolutely amazing to watch someone learn, grow and experience each new thing. Every step and new event makes you realize how much you totally don't pay attention to and haven't even thought about for years and years. Children really open your eyes to everything you take for granted.

The first year of my daughter's life was extremely difficult. I spent the first three months debilitated by postpartum depression. Then I went back to work and developed a panic disorder. Excessive hormones and my brain chemicals just don't mix, I guess. The best thing about that first year was watching my baby grow. Every new size of clothing was cause for a celebration. Every new milestone, every new tooth, every new noise or new sign, was a reminder that she won't be a baby forever. Now, as a toddler, she cracks me up and blows my mind on a daily basis. She's learning, she's talking, she's listening to me (sometimes), and she's showing me little glimpses of the person she'll grow up to be. And sometimes, if I'm lucky and I'm having a good day, I feel like I might finally be getting the hang of this 'mom' thing.
