OnSugar Blog: No TV Today, Kids

Lots of moms like to think out loud, and Tiffany Carboni is one of them. In a post on her OnSugar blog, Mother Tongue & Other Sharp Objects, she explores what kids do when mom won't turn the boob tube on.

Hey moms, ever have a day like this?

It is such a beautiful day outside, kids. Go out and play.

No, you may not watch TV today. Out you go. Explore the yard. Use your imagination and have fun. I love you.

How can you be done exploring? Have you turned over every rock and fondled every bug? Have you touched, sniffed, and appreciated the details of every flower from my beloved garden? No? Then you haven't accomplished anything. Now go have fun while I do my chores.

I didn't really mean pick all my flowers, including the roses, the gardenias, and every single blueberry. But I'm happy you enjoyed yourselves. Why don't you play with a puzzle? Don't even think of turning on the boob tube. I'm watching you.

Apparently I'm not watching close enough. I didn't know it was possible to ruin a puzzle like that. Boy, you two are nothing if not methodical. Now, why don't you draw Mommy some pictures.

Wow, you drew some pictures, didn't you? All over the hardwood floor. I'm not sure how to get that indelible ink off without refinishing the entire floor. Your father is going to have some choice words tonight. Go into your room and think about what you've done.

Love it!! sounds just like my house. I have found that instead of refusing to let them watch, they have to "earn" tv time. This can be done through chores, homework completed, music practice finished, ect. Then, tv goes off for baths, getting ready for bed ect. This takes the responsibility for TV off of you and puts it squarely on them. When they are younger, I use clean rooms, pick up the toys ect. to earn each program. That will have them bugging you for chores to do to earn more tv. That can make a happy mom!! I had to laugh at this because when I forget my own rules, it sounds just like my house!!
