There's Going to Be a Live-Action American Girl TV Show

Feb 2 2016 - 12:30pm

Amazon Studios and Mattel brand American Girl have announced a multiyear production deal, according to Hollywood Reporter [1]. The first of the four live-action specials is to premiere later this year on Amazon Prime, joining Amazon's growing list of original kids series like Tumble Leaf, Just Add Magic, and Creative Galaxy. Characters from the Girl of Year franchise will be featured in one of the specials, while two others will spotlight BeForever girls. The deal also includes the possibility of multiple seasons based on American Girl characters.

"Amazon Studios has differentiated itself by creating shows that bring more than just entertainment to families," said Mattel Chief Content Officer Catherine Balsam-Schwaber [2]. "Their focus on creating positive role models that both inspire and educate was an absolute perfect fit with Mattel's mission of creating purposeful play."

Amazon's deal with the popular doll franchise may in fact be a game changer, especially for rival Netflix, which has also been ramping up its family-friendly content [3]. Although American Girl is no stranger to live-action production, we're excited to follow the inspiring stories on the small screen.
