Annabel Karmel Halloween Party Food For Kids

Annabel Karmel: Edible Spiders and Bloody Finger Sandwiches

Editor’s note: The following is a guest post written by Annabel Karmel, the British children's chef and kiddie cookbook author. This week Annabel shares two terrifyingly tasty Halloween recipes that will add some fright to the festive night!

Halloween is a great excuse for a children’s party, so take the children trick-or-treating and prepare some great, festive food for them to return to when they come home. You can really get into the spirit of things by getting the children to help you with the cooking. These recipes are simple to make and by using your cauldron (mixing bowl) and wand (wooden spoon), you can concoct devilish delights for all the family to enjoy.

Chocolate Spider Cupcakes

Chocolate Spider Cupcakes

Ingredients

  1. 1 dozen chocolate cupcakes
  2. 1/4 cup store-bought chocolate flavor frosting
  3. Chocolate sugar sprinkles
  4. 120 chocolate Pocky stick cookies (from 4 or 5 x 2.8-ounce boxes, such as Lu or Glico)
  5. Licorice Allsorts

Directions

  1. Bake your favorite chocolate cupcake recipe and cool completely.
  2. Spread a little chocolate buttercream over each of the cupcakes.
  3. Put some chocolate sprinkles into a bowl and dip the cupcakes upside down into the sprinkles so that they stick to the buttercream.
  4. To make the legs, take the Pocky sticks and cut off the piece not covered with chocolate. Cut a quarter of the sticks in half . Stick four short lengths of Pocky sticks on each side of the spider's body, then melt the chocolate. Dip one end of each of the long and the short Pocky sticks into the chocolate and arrange them on trays or baking sheets lined with greaseproof or baking paper so that they attach at an angle of about100 degrees and allow the chocolate to set. The melted chocolate will harden as it cools keeping the legs stuck together. Push one end of the short Pocky stick leg into the body of the spider and then repeat until you get four legs either side.
  5. Finish off with Licorice Allsort eyes.

Ingredients

  1. Thin sliced white bread, crusts removed
  2. Soft margarine
  3. Cream cheese or peanut butter
  4. Almonds
  5. Strawberry jam or tomato ketchup

Directions

Gently flatten the slices of bread with a rolling pin to make them more pliable.

Spread with a little margarine and either some cream cheese or peanut butter.

Roll up the sandwiches and make three indentations with a blunt knife to form the finger joints.

Trim the ends of the fingers into a ‘V’ shape and stick an almond on to each tip with a little cream cheese or peanut butter to form the nails.

Now for the gruesome bit - squirt some tomato ketchup over the end of the finger for the blood!
