Baby Bump: Birth Stools

For delivering mamas, the second stage of labor can be the most arduous, so some moms-to-be opt for a birth stool to help the process along. Said to widen the pelvis and allow gravity to naturally help the baby down while reducing the chance of tearing, the stool supports the woman while she does a standing squat. Normally made of wood like poplar or oak, the furniture piece has handles and soft edges for safety and costs between $100 to $250.

Did you use a birth stool?

I hated laying down during labor, so this would probably be nice!

We are nearly exactly at the same place, MacGirl. I am just shy of 38.5 weeks! Difference is I'm totally not ready yet. I'm scared and not ready for such a big responsibility. I'm in tons of pain (and have been for weeks), but it's still better for me if he stays in there for awhile.I'm planning to get lots of drugs and as early as possible, so I can't see why I'd need this. But it's my first, so I'm not at all sure what to expect.

No, but that's awesome. Anything that encourages a more natural and productive way than lying flat on the back, I think is great.

I had a c-section and was asleep, so no. But, I'd never heard of a birth stool. I have heard of squatting on some bricks, though. Sounds fun to me!

I think the stool sounds better than the toilet but at this point (38.5 weeks) I'll take the toilet or anything else that will get this baby out of me ;-)

You don't need a birth stool, all you need is a toilet. Seriously. Labor on the toilet. It certainly worked for me!
