Why Didn't Anybody Tell Me? Poopcorn

So this may not be for easy–queasy stomached people, but it's the truth. Or at least it was for me and nearly every other mom with whom I have discussed this issue.

When I was in the hospital and my newborn had her first tarry bowel movement, it was as if she had been accepted to Stanford. We cheered her on and even documented it on the easy–erase marker board. Go Baby! And then the poops turned that yellowish color and came more frequently, which also made us happy. To find out my shocking discovery,

.

My senses definitely changed while I was pregnant. I couldn't stand the taste of mint and I could smell things a mile away. So I wasn't sure if my nose was playing tricks on me, but I was fairly certain that every time I changed my daughter's poopy diapers, I got a whiff of buttered popcorn. Yes, I said buttered popcorn! It was as if I was sitting at an afternoon matinee.

Every time I sniff a warm bucket of popcorn oozing with butter, I flinch. Sadly, I don't know if I will ever be able to look at it the same.

Maybe one day way down the line when my children have flown the coop, I will be able to relax with Orville Redenbacher. But for now, we are definitely still on a break.

When this was originally posted, I wasn't pregnant with my second daughter yet, but she's here now, 10 months old, and she has buttered popcorn scented poop, too!

I always thought my breastfed, newborn son's poo smelled like caramel corn. As a result, I haven't been able to eat any caramel corn since he was born.

My sense of smell has been changed forever since having my four girls. I can smell things a mile away. And my baby's diapers always smelled like Kalamata Olives, which is one of my husband's favorite things to eat. My youngest is almost 3, and I've just gotten to the point where I can eat olives again!

lol, the smell of movie theater popcorn makes me ill, but i never made that connection. when dh makes it at home i make him open it outside. remember that thing about not breathing in the fumes when you first open the bag because it causes cancer? cite it all the time to him!

I remember the corn nuts pee... don't remember the buttery popcorn diaper smell. Should be able to verify or deny this in the next week or so ;-)

I have 3 kids and have been saying since the first that when they are newborns (only breastfed as far as I know), their poop smells like buttered popcorn, but only the microwaveable kind. I can't stand to be in that aisle at the grocery store!!! And cornuts smell like early morning pee pee dipes in case you wanted to know. :o)

JennyJen, that completely makes sense. I remember being at a changing station and the smell of the diaper across from us was HORRIFIC. And all I could think was, "I can't believe I will be there soon." But, my daughter's diapers still don't bother me that much though I am pretty sure they would send someone else over the edge!

I know this is going to sound really really strange, but I read in the journal of Evolution and Human Behavior somewhere that mother's have a natural instinct to "like" the smell of their baby's poop. They did a study presenting different poopy diapers to mothers and they always chose their own child's as the least repulsive. The researchers claim it is an evolutionary adaptation allowing mothers to overcome their natural disgust so that they can properly care for their babies.

When I was breastfeeding my daughter, I always commented that her poop smelled a bit like burnt popcorn.

Can't say that smell is what I met when I changed a diaper. Mine always had a soured sock smell to them. And while pregnant... my sense of smell was heightened as well. I couldn't pass the pet section without wanting to hurl because of the cedar chips for hamster bedding. The smell still gags me. Not all cedar smells do this just those cedar chips.

My son's poop also smells faintly like buttered popcorn. My husband insists it began the day after I had a bag of microwave popcorn, but I think it already smelled that way. I thought we were the only ones!!!
