Why Didn't Anybody Tell Me: Sundial Sleeper

There's an old joke that sleeping like a baby really means fitful nights of shut-eye with frequent wakings for food. Once my son moved from the bassinet to the crib, I carefully placed a mobile and aquarium on one end of the sleep area, fully expecting him to drift off to sleep and wake back up in the same place. I would walk in to check on him and would find him with his head at the complete opposite end of the crib. Ten minutes later he'd be lying sideways. Curious as to how he'd make his way around his bed, I spent one night with my eyes glued to his video monitor. It was during that night that I saw him wiggle back and forth until he had moved in a complete 360-degree rotation. Over the course of an evening, he would make at least three rotations around the crib, without ever waking from his slumber. Our doctor referred to it as sundial sleeping, where a baby moves clockwise around his crib. The term sounded perfect for my lil sunshine's sleep habit.
