Books For Young Girls

The Best Summer Reads For Young Readers

The following post was written by Kim Wardell, who blogs at DESIGN + LIFE + KIDS and is part of POPSUGAR Select Moms.

School is out and the kids are home for Summer, yay! While there is plenty to do outside, we also love those cozy rainy days where we're hanging inside with the cool air conditioning and nothing to do. So this Summer, I'm stocking up on a few great books for my girls and me to get lost in. I was introduced to a few of these titles by my wonderful mother-in-law and her sister. They seriously seem to be in the know about the latest and greatest! Among their ideas for the 4- to 8-year-olds in your life are some wordless storybooks — they're perfect for both little and big imaginations! I'm saving these for the perfect Summer day, and here's why.

  • What Do You Do With an Idea? by Kobi Yamada
This is a story about a little boy who has a small idea. As the story progresses, so does his confidence, and his idea becomes bigger and bigger. It's a tale to inspire and encourage even the tiniest of dreams, and the illustrations are simply beautiful!

  • Olivia and the Fairy Princesses by Ian Falconer
We're big fans of Olivia at our house because this little girl doesn't let anyone or anything stop her from being her unique self. This story hits home for all of our little princesses who love the frill and fluff but also want to add a special touch to their style.

  • A Wolf's Tale by Eva Montanari
This one is a cute spinoff of the classic tale of the three pigs, now with the wolf's great-grandson. I love the drawing perspective and coloring of the book's illustrations!

  • Flora and the Flamingo by Molly Idle
This book is simply beautiful. The pictures, the flow, and the sweet story of Flora and her dancing flamingo friend come without any words to read, leaving the dialog up to you and your little. Absolutely love this one!

  • Tuesday by David Wiesner
This is an older book that has been reproduced with new technology to capture the beauty and detail of the author's vibrant watercolor paintings. It's a wordless book about the whimsical journey of a family of frogs who venture out on a Tuesday on their magical lily pads. It's a great bedtime story that will have the kids dreaming up new adventures!

  • Ish by Peter Reynolds
Ramon is a budding little artist who insists his drawings be absolutely perfect. That is until his little sister shows him that art isn't perfect. It's perfect-ish.
