Blast Back From the Past: Retro Cartoons For Kids

Flintstones, meet the Flintstones. . . . The next generation is being introduced to the Pebbles and Bam Bam, The Jetsons, Banana Splits, and more cartoons via Boomerang, a cable network broadcasting classic animated shows around-the-clock. While vegging out in front of the boob tube may have been part of a child's daily routine back in the day, viewing time is now a hot topic among parents.

Watching shows like Tom and Jerry as an adult, it's hard not to notice how simple the plot lines were and to catch more than a few politically incorrect phrases. Many episodes include inappropriate language, violence, and women commonly in the homemaker role. Do you allow your children to watch retro TV shows, or do you prefer the more progressive modern ones?

I watched all these shows and turned out fine, just as I'm sure my own children will.

I don't have kids yet but when I do I will definitely expose them to the cartoons from my childhood. I actually think they are better than the cartoons currently. Sure they are a little violent, but I grew up ok and knew how to separate reality from a cartoon. I will teach my child to do the same.

I don't let my 3 year old watch Tom and Jerry. It's way too violent and I don't think he needs to be exposed to that crap. It's funny because before I had kids if I heard someone say "tom and jerry is too violent" I would have thought they just rode in from Pleasantville. Noggin is the best.

It's not that I don't like the old ones but I just love the lessons in the new ones.

i don't have kids yet, but when i hang out with the kids i spend lots of time with, i can't help but hate most of their children's shows...the cartoons aren't bad (Dora, Backyardigans etc.) but the ones with grown men jumping around and singing and creepy real-life ones...ugh i loved the ones when i was a kid but i can't stand some of the modern ones now
