Boy Suspended For Wearing Purse

Boy Suspended For Bringing Purse to School

We've heard of students violating schools' dress codes, but what about an accessory code? Skylar Davis, a 13-year-old at Anderson County Senior-Junior School, was suspended for bringing a bag to class. But it wasn't the bag's contents that lead to the suspension. Davis believes the principal did not approve of a boy carrying an accessory — a Vera Bradley bag — meant for girls. School officials say that students are simply not allowed to bring bags to class. Davis, however, noted that his female classmates carry purses regularly and have never been asked to remove them. He also points out that he has worn this bag since school started in August and was never reprimanded.

To see what school administrators and Skylar's mom have to say about the suspension, read the full story at The Stir.

If the student was carrying the bag to class, and other female students were in class, with purses, then the male student has every damn right to carry a bag to class. If all female students purses & bags are kept in lockers, then this student's should be as well. Here they're referred to as man purses, and everyone slings one on, male or female.

The boy was not suspended for carrying a purse to school. He was suspended for taking his purse to class. There is a school-wide rule that purses, regardless of who they belong to, must remain in lockers during class. He repeatedly broke the rule and was suspended for it. I've seen some interviews with some of the students, and nobody seems to really care if he carries a purse outside of class.
