Packed on the Pounds After Weaning Your Wee One?

Celebrities love to attribute their rapid postpartum weight loss to nursing their newborn babies, but are they willing to admit that it can also help them to gain weight in the long run? After gaining 40 pounds while pregnant, Kourtney Kardashian credited much of her 45-pound weight loss to breastfeeding lil Mason for 14 months. In March, she announced on her blog that she and her tot had decided to wean, saying, "My love affair with breast feeding has come to a sad end." Last night, she took to Twitter to promote one of her weight loss products, noting, "Wow.I have gained almost 10 pounds since I stopped breast feeding."

Doctors recommend that breastfeeding mamas eat an extra 400 calories a day to help maintain their milk supply. Following nine months of pregnancy and several months of nursing, it can be difficult for women to cut back to a regular diet, leading many moms to gain weight once they wean their tots.

I was just telling a friend yesterday I gained 5 lbs since weaning 3 weeks ago. It took me a while to figure out thats what had happened. Now I have to make a big adjustment to my eating habits. I lost all the baby weight with minimal effort. Its strange to have to think about it after so long, from being pregnant and nursing.

I was one of those women that didn't loose much weight while breast feeding. When I weaned my daughters my body slowly got back to normal and it was easier to watch and cut my calories.

I was a victim of post-weaning weight gain. In the month after we stopped breastfeeding, I immediately put on six pounds. I was shocked until I looked at what I was really eating – I was still eating whatever I wanted, something I can't really do on a regular basis!

Ditto. I'm starting to wean my 18 month old now but geez...how do you cut back on food when your kid's waking up 2-3 times/night still (yes, I know I need to sleep train better but that's another topic) and you're starving all the time from nursing?
