Breton Nautical Striped Shirts for Kids

Trendtotting: Breton Stripes Keep Lil Sailors on Trend

Ahoy ye mateys! A sure sign that Spring is upon us is the return of mariner style to store clothing racks. Multiple generations of moms and clothing designers have shown a strong affinity for tots in tees adorned with anchors, boats, and nautical gear, but this year's seaworthy styles take a turn toward the traditional.

The Breton stripe shirt, which originated the French province of Brittany and became the official French sailing uniform in 1858, is making a comeback this season and both moms and tots are embracing it. Unlike the black and white Venetian stripes sported by fellow celeb baby Shiloh Jolie-Pitt, the white-based shirts with horizontal blue stripes were originally used to help locate sailors who fell overboard. Today, the Breton-style shirts can help mamas keep track of their lil ones among the sea of tykes on the playground. Found in both tee and dress styles (such as the one worn by Violet Affleck this week), the trend is easy and inexpensive to jump in on. Check out some of our favorite picks below.
