California High School Stages an Attack Drill

Is your child's school prepared for the possibility of a gunman's attack? With school districts around the country assessing their readiness, one district in California took the unusual step of staging a full-on simulation. On Monday, student actors at Petersen Alternative Center for Education in Modesto posed as both attackers and victims and played out a frightening siege scenario using fake pipe bombs and blood-red paint.

Once 911 was called things got even more intense: the county sent police officers and a SWAT team to the school to end the attacks and "rescue" barricaded students and staff, a process which took more than 30 minutes.

The exercise revealed weaknesses that would handicap similar efforts in a real attack, and the lessons learned, as well as footage of the event, will be shared with school districts around the country.
