Your Body at 22 Weeks Pregnant

Congratulations, You’re now halfway through your pregnancy! Some women find that the second trimester of their pregnancy is the most fun: your libido may be back and more powerful than ever, your energy level may be higher, and your nesting urges are increasing.

Does it feel like all sorts of things are happening with your skin these days? Due to pregnancy-related hormones, areas around your neck, your armpits, your nipples, your genitalia, and on a thin strip of skin from the chest down to your pubic bone in the midline may darken. Sun exposure will make these areas even darker, so use sun block. (Sunscreens safe for pregnancy can be found here. If you end up having areas of darkened skin after your baby is born, you can get a prescription for bleaching cream after you have finished nursing.)

Not only is your skin getting darker due to an increase in hormones from the placenta, your skin may also get oilier, and you may notice more acne on your face, chest and back. Over-the-counter Benzoyl peroxide cream is safe to use, but often washing frequently with soap and water will suffice. Creams containing Retin-A are not recommended during pregnancy.

The high estrogen levels in your body will also create more blood vessels under your skin. Therefore, your palms, cheeks and soles may feel very warm and look red. In addition, skin tags and moles will often grow during pregnancy as a result of the increase in growth hormones. It’s a good idea to have your health care provider look at the fast growing ones.

Your Baby at 22 Weeks Pregnant

Your baby is now about the size of a papaya and weighs about 3/4 of a pound. He’s getting more active, and his facial characteristics are more apparent now. Tooth buds have formed under his gums, and lanugo (hair) covers her body. If your baby is a girl, her ovaries are starting to produce eggs. If your baby is a boy, the testicles are starting to descend into the scrotum.
