The Children's Table: Generations of Seating Arrangements

For generations, the youngest members of a family were booted from the dinner table when there was a shortage of space at holiday gatherings. The kids would end up eating in a makeshift space — sitting in kitchen drawers, at a card table, out on the porch or on stairs — (even after they came of age) waiting for a family member to move, divorce, or die so the "child" could secure a sacred seat. But during those meals eaten everywhere from the living room floor to the basement, children bonded with the cousins and friends who ended up in the same situation. Over time, perhaps getting to the adult table didn't matter anymore. In today's age of kid-centric parenting, design-conscious moms are encouraging those same familial relationships by creating space and festive tablescapes that cater to their tots — areas even the adults envy! The bonus is that the youngsters stay occupied (and in their seats to eat) so the adults can relax a bit and enjoy uninterrupted conversation. A little extra effort — like wrapping a table in butcher paper so the little darlings can doodle or putting a serve yourself soda bar in the center of the table — goes a long way to create vivid childhood memories.

What was that movie where the last single adult is seated at he childrens table at a wedding? God that was funny. I usually seat everyone together at one long table, but give the kids different table settings. Like for hanksgivngthe kids had the chocolate turkeys to hold their place cards and he adults had pumpkins. Love doing a holiday table. :naughty_elves:
