Accessories to Make Cloth Diapering a Cinch

The cloth diaper movement has another lil celebaby poster child. Alyson Hannigan was spotted out with her five-month-old daughter, Satyana, holding a gDiaper in hand. As more parents consider going green, a number of cloth diapers have sprung up with stylish diaper covers to get competitive with their disposable counterparts. Before making the commitment to go with cloth, check out our tips for doing so, and see some of the accessories available.

We are using gdiapers with altered cpf's, and they work really well. She's reaching the age where I'm going to begin potty training, and she's a fairly heavy wetter. For the next one, I'm going to try some of the other covers like thirsties with home made inserts and some prefolds. I like it, and we do laundry every other day. I really loved the gdiapers at first, but I'm kind of tiring of the snap in liners. They didn't last very long even without being dried/put in the sun, and the elasticity is pretty shot.

Cloth diapering is a cinch. For us, it justified our desire to purchase a new washer and dryer, and overall it's much easier than we ever imagined. It's very cost effective, as we actually prefer using CPF's (Chinese Prefolds) over the more expensive AIO's (all-in-ones) or pocket diapers. And, laundry isn't that big of an issue - a load about every 3 days is all we do. On extended trips and for when friends watch our baby for us, we use g-diapers. I feel MUCH better about using those vs. regular disposables, and the covers will work with CPF's too. I agree with the accessories listed above (though, we don't use the diaper sprayer). Snappies are a must have for using CPF's. I'd also add that a special "diaper pail" isn't necessary. We actually just use a stainless steel can that didn't fit into our kitchen remodel. I highly recommend the Planet Wise bags for a diaper pail. They are awesome, have an elastic band around the top so they don't slip down the pail when in use. And the diaper liners aren't absorbent - they are useful for flushing solids and protecting the diaper from diaper ointment if used (as it will not wash out easily and may effect the absorbency of the cloth diaper). The only other suggestion I might add are wool soakers for overnight if you have a super soaker/ heavy wetter.
