What These Cops Did After They Pulled Over a Woman in Labor Will Mortify You

In the movies, if you're pulled over for speeding because your wife is in labor and you're racing to get to the hospital in time, the cop calls in a full police escort to get you there in record time.

In reality, at least for an Indiana couple, the response from police officers was far more disturbing – turning what should have been a night of anticipation and celebration into a nightmare. The incident, which occurred in January 2012, has been brought to light after the cop car's dash cam footage was released this week.

The nearly eight-minute video — which includes explicit language and graphic content that might be upsetting to viewers — shows several Crown Point, IN, police officers detaining James Reiner and his pregnant wife, Dana, on the side of the road after James did not pull over immediately. He'd only driven roughly 1.1 miles after the police sirens began, and in that time had actually called 911 for help because Dana had told him not to pull over — that she wasn't going to make it to the hospital if they delayed. The 911 operator, however, encouraged them to stop the car and explain the situation to the officers.

Only, he didn't have a chance.

Although James claimed he hadn't even been speeding and obeyed all traffic laws before being hailed by the cop car, the couple were treated like criminals. Instantly, Sgt. Anthony Dandurand verbally assaulted James and threatened to shoot him. While handcuffed and lying face-down on the ground, James desperately pleaded with them. Instead, they responded by taunting him, saying, "Now you're going to be in the Lake County Jail when your kid is born." Even Dana got out of the car to try to speak, between contractions and while her water was breaking, to an officer. He pointed a Taser at her stomach, shouting to "Get back in the f*cking car."

Eventually, after more police cars arrived on the scene, an ambulance came to take Dana to the hospital, where she delivered her baby mere minutes later. The umbilical cord was wrapped around her newborn's neck, and her doctors said the infant wouldn't have survived if she'd given birth in her car.

Of course, her husband wasn't able to be by her side for any of that. Instead, he was booked on a felony charge of resisting law enforcement and spent the night in jail.

The couple tried to press criminal charges more than two years ago, but they are now just focused on having James's criminal record expunged so they can finally put that devastating night behind them.
