Pack Your Bags: Crewcuts's Jenny Cooper Tells Us What to Pack For a Family Vacation

Aug 5 2011 - 5:20am

August is a month of travel for many families — a time to pack everyone up and head to the shore for a few days or weeks of relaxation and bonding before the hectic school year begins. With family vacations in mind, we turned to Jenny Cooper, head designer at J.Crew's Crewcuts division, to see what she'd bring on a family trip. A mom of two boys — Walker, 9, and Miller, 6 — the Brooklyn mama knows a thing or two about packing light and giving her tots some leeway with their travel bags. Keep reading to see her picks!

The most important thing you need is a suitcase. If I had a girl, I'd get her the wandering star luggage [1] ($98), which I love, and since I don't have girls, I'll probably just get it for myself!

But I got [the boys] these amazing suitcases that they pack themselves. These Jellybean suitcases [2] are small sized, on four wheels, and totally lightweight. I encourage them to pack themselves. They pack the books, the toys, and the Legos that they want to bring with them. And then, obviously, they need a little help with the underwear, the swim trunks, and the things that they don’t think about!

My kids hate sunscreen and for some reason find the stick application [3] less frightening. I don't know why they are deathly afraid of lotion!

A Trilby [hat] — to shade them from the sun and make them look like they just stepped off a movie set. The eyelet flower [4] for girls and the striped band [5] for boys.

Sunglasses, obviously! The Selima Aviator [6] for boys and the Ecole [7] for girls. I love the old-school glamour of the Ecole for a little dress up on the beach.

Since they need swim trunks, we made one modeled on our club short, a quick-drying cotton nylon that they can play in and go swimming, without pausing to change! Walker and Miller love that idea. It's called the mini-diamond swim short [8]. Fortunately, we also made them for men so their dad can do the same, but I would get him the microstripe swim short so they don't match.

Last but not least would have to be the Holga camera [9] – so they can take pictures of their sandcastles!

For Mom

Then for me, it would have to be the ">LemLem Grace Tunic [10]. It's the perfect thing to toss over a polka-dot high-waisted bikini [11] (another current obsession!) so lightweight and airy with a graphic stripe.
