Did You Have a Surprise Pregnancy?

Families happen whether they are planned or not! While some couples carefully orchestrate conception, other women end up pregnant as a result of miscalculated dates, birth control gone awry or other reasons. Sometimes the surprise ends up being a family secret. Did you have an unplanned pregnancy?

We were married three months when my husband and I discovered a surprise! We had been using the patch, which worked, but we ran out of them the third month of our marriage..so we abstained for 10 days and then used the "pull out method" (I know ppl that it works for and then heard of plenty it does NOT work for, but I didn't know that at the time). A few weeks later my brother-in-law mentioned that one of our friends thought we were pregant. My husband and I said "pffft..yah right!" But that got me thinking so a week later I took a test, but the plus sign was so faint I thought "nope, we're not preggers.." ( You can tell I was new to the whole pregnancy thing) Then a week later from that, a friend of mine informed me that a faint line means probably a yes. She told me to try another.. and that test came out with very DARK lines! We were shocked! I did miscarry at 7 weeks ,however, and it was very sad. After that whole experience we decided we weren't ready to start a family yet. But, I will never forget my first pregnancy. It was an amazing experience even though it was also a sad one. I look forward to having a baby someday, hopefully! I am hoping to get pregnant again sometime, and I think we will be a little more prepared(even if we have another surprise) as it has been almost three years since we have been married. Thanks to everyone who posts, I love reading the stories!

What makes it even more amazing is we had orignally wanted an october wedding date but my must have location wasnt' available so we had it in May. Nope. I was married for 8 years and it took over a year of serious trying to conceive my first daughter. I was only off the pill for a month before conceiving my second. I can't call it a surprise because I was having unprotected sex with my husband. I consider both of my daughters to be a blessing, though.

I completely agree with TMommy, although I think if you have stopped taking birth control, it shouldn't really be a surprise. I got pregnant my first month of trying and it was definitely a surprise that it happened that quickly. Changing gears from preventing to promoting takes longer than a month to get emotionally and mentally used to.

My first one was a surprise. Big surprise. Way to be welcomed home from Italy. Jeez. This second time, I had been trying so it was planned.

I don't know about anyone else but getting pregnant quickly even if its "planned" is a crazy thing. At least it was for me. You think "Wait, really? So fast? Give me a second! I'm not ready! I thought I had more time!" I remember crying hysterically when I found out and my husband asking "Are those happy tears?". I blubbered "I don't know......" :-) After years and years of trying to NOT get pregnant its hard to shift gears. Now I see my friends who have had trouble or are still working on getting pregnant and I feel extra grateful for my beautiful baby. I also say to my husband, "You know, when they do get pregnant they will be lucky in that they will appreciate every single moment of it....That pregnancy and baby will never be taken for granted...."

wow, live42day! I know it's still possible to get pregnant with your tubes tied, but I've never heard of it happening to anyone (first hand accounts).

It was 21 years ago but a total surprise. I had my tubes tied after my son was born (we already had two girls.) After the surgery we used protection the required 3 months to avoid a surprise pregnancy :) But here is the big surprise...After 7 yrs of not using protection I suddenly missed a period and I started thinking something was wrong with me so I went to see my Dr. and he examined me and after I put my clothes back on he came in to tell me what he had found (I was freaking out that maybe I had something horrible like cancer.) He comes in and asks me how many times did you say you've been pregnant? I answered 4 because I had 1 miscarriage and 3 live births. And then he says well this is your 5th. It was not sinking in what he was saying so I had to ask him "What do you mean?" DUH .... Boy were we surprised :)

I'd gone off the pill and we were waiting the recommended 3 months before trying (i.e. trying to not get pregnant the old fashioned way). We were going to start trying after Christmas, but I found out I was pregnant in November. We weren't far from trying, but baby definitely came as a surprise!

Our first was a complete surprise. I thought I was late due to wedding planning stress and took a test one week before our wedding. Umm, SURPRISE! Greatest surprise of our lives :) This second one was a semi-surprise. We wanted our kids close and planned on starting to try in October. The baby had other plans and I found I was already pregnant at the beginning of October.

We'd always known we were going to have a child but I was told I wouldn't be able to without a lot of time/money/effort and has made the decision to really start trying at 30- so for 7 years of our relationship we didn't use protection/bc of any kind. Then suddenly I got pregnant. Nothing had changed at all. So while we didn't do anything to prevent it, it was a surprise!
