Did Your Doctor Do Internal Exams at Every Visit?

Did Your Doctor Do Internal Exams at Every Visit?

A friend and I are going through our pregnancies together this time. We are due just two weeks apart so it has been interesting to compare our feelings, cravings and discomforts along the way.

When talking about our recent trips to the doctor, she mentioned that her OB/GYN did a 30-second internal exam to check the position of her cervix and does at each check-up. In each of my pregnancies, my doctor has reserved the internal exam for just a few appointments. Some quick research showed me that internal exams were routine a generation ago, but most doctors now wait until the end to do them.

Did you have internal exams at each of your prenatal visits?

I never had an exam at a routine appointment. My Dr said it wasn't necessary during a healthy, normal pregnancy. I'm glad for it too!

every time you are examined in this way you increase the chance of introducing an infection. unless the mom has a history of an incompetent cervix or a shortened cervix, i can't imagine why a doc would do this until the last few weeks. and even then, a lot can be determined by ultrasound.

I actually didn't have any internal exams with my OB at all. I had many with my RE during IVF and when I was first pregnant, but when I switched to a regular OB at 16 weeks, we felt we didn't need to torture me any further. I was good with that. Even at the end when I was near my due date, she gave me a choice to check for dilation. I didn't think it was necessary. I had my first cervix/dilation check when I was actually in early labor.

I had a pap and internal exam at my very first appointment, but won't again until much closer to the end.
