Does This Family Change the Way You View Polygamy?

Kody Brown, a hoodie wearing, shaggy-haired dad is one of the 40,000 people living in an illegal Utah polygamist family. The laid back father of twelve children, by his three wives, breaks what many consider the polygamist stereotype with his modern appearance and casual demeanor. After watching this clip of the seemingly happy family, do you believe that taking more than one spouse should be legal?

I fell that if it's between consenting adults that's fine. It wouldn't work for me, but whatever works for you and isn't hurting anyone then whatever.

Polygamy is immoral and not good for society. It IS illegal in the U.S. and I agree that that man is teaching all of his kids that it's okay to break the law if it suit's you. His "cool appearance" does not change that this is a sick practice which teaches skewed values and undermines marriage. What about forsaking all others?

laid back or not, either way its doesnt change the fact that having multiple wives is illegal and gross. nobody should have to share their spouse or claim your child as theirs.

It doesn't bother me...but I agree with others saying that everyone needs to be adults. Not 14 yr old girls!

no, this video is just as creepy as other polygamist families sure, the dad is kinda "cool" but the one mom they showed looks totally traditional and the dad couldn't remember his kid's age just because the kids are encouraged to share their "lifestyle" with their friends doesn't mean they won't be ostracized...and none of them seemed super happy...the one kid said she never would marry into a polygamist family when she grows up....well if she saw her (4?) parents super happy why wouldn't she? obviously there's something there she doesn't wish for herself

I dont agree with this lifestyle, Its not for me, and in some instances it can be detrimental and confining and not good for the family. Other cultures also practice cannibalism, should we do that too? I mean its readily available and it works for others.

i don't think it should be illegal. how can living with and having kids with a variety of people be illegal? What about all the men that have babies and leave on to the next woman... are they breaking the law? I think marriage should be a union between two people recognized by the government. I personally don't think that church have anything to do with those unions. If people want their marriage to be recognized by a church, that should be a separate ceremony and certificate. Since polygamy is church-related, they can seal with whomever they want as far as I'm concerned (over the age of 18 please). At least they're all staying together and trying to be functional as a family. The details of it being recognized as a legitimate union would be tricky for tax purposes and all that, but the idea of it being illegal seems a bit outdated.

it reminds me of that show Big Love. a modern polygomist family.

no. when the mormon church allowed a man to have more than one wife it was because there weren't enough husbands for all the women and the women needed a man to support the household. the man was required to have a home for each wife and the children he had with her. when the U.S. made polygamy illegal the mormon church also stopped sanctioning it. as "cool" as this guy acts, he's breaking the law and teaching his children everyday that if you don't like the laws just pay no attention to them. he's also teaching them that the commitment of marriage means less than what it was intended to mean "forsaking all others" is in those vows for a reason. what kind of commitment is "yes, i will sleep with you too?"

Not really. Polygamy as it is practiced in the USA is mainly by sects invested in restricting women's rights in severe ways, and I'm sure this dad believes in that too. Underage girls marrying creepy old men should be illegal. Several adults consenting to live together on communes? Well, it's not of my business. As long as children aren't being harmed, and as long as human rights are being protected (and yes, in this country we have a consensus that women have equal rights) then I don't care what people do.

What the hell can multiple wives do that only one can't besides giving the husband a legitimate excuse to have sex with lots of women. Personally I think it's gross and abnormal. It just boggles the mind......period Oh and I agree 100% with runningesq......

Two adults make a decision? Fine. 50+ year old men 'marrying' 14 year old girls? No.

In theory, let mature adults do what they want with other consenting mature adults. But in reality, the vast majority of these polygamist sects are very controlling of women and women do not have equal status. They do not have financial independence, are not always given good educations, and are sometimes isolated from the outside world. It's hard to say if they are really making a free choice even if they say they agree to it.

i think that we need to make marriage legal for EVERYONE before we can even begin to consider this.

I have no problem with polygamy as long as its between consenting adults. I also think if it were legal we could regulate welfare a bit on it, because right now many polygamist wives claim they are single mothers and get huge welfare checks.

I think it's fine for adults to make the decision to do this...I worry more about the children who are brought up on compounds and ranches and have no choice and no view of the outside world. The Amish live a strict lifestyle but still have a period of their lives where they leave the community to experience life a different way and then make their own decision about returning or not. The children on some of the polygamist ranches and compounds that never learn that there are other ways to live and are forced or pressured into marriage (even if they are old enough) are the ones we should worry about. These kids seem well brought up and intelligent and they will be allowed to make their own decision without pressure or fear so that's fine.

I should definitely be legal as long as both man and woman agree to the set up. If any is being forced into the relationship then it should not be allowed - that goes also for monogamist relationships.

This doesn't really bother me. I just know I wouldn't be able to share my husband with other women. I wonder if some of the stigma comes from stories of men taking on multiple wives and occasionally some are freshly legal meanwhile they are in their 40's. I think that's a bit creepy regardless of polygamy aspect.

Sure it should be. If that's what people want to do, what is the problem? If everyone is okay with it and wants it, it should be none of the rest of the worlds business. Oddly enough, the US is not like the rest of the world. Many other countries practice polygamy, and it works just fine. The US isn't so unique if all of our practices came from other countries...engagement, rings, marriage -- it's all from elsewhere. But as soon as someone says polygamy people go talking about how that's "X countries practice, not ours". Well, if we made other countries practices our own before, why not again? Yes, yes, the bible says this and that. I don't care what the bible says. They edit it everyday anyway. So, why not let our country off the short leash and let them live the life they want to live. It's not saying yes, give three year olds crack cocaine to take to school...it's polygamy. Why make it illegal? If it has nothing to do with you personally, why care what other people do?
