Ecomomics: Hire a Sitter Who Is Collecting Unemployment?

In light of the economy, laid off workers are trying to make ends meet. For many, unemployment checks aren't enough to pay the bills so some people have taken to "off the book" jobs they don't have to claim like nannying. Would you hire a babysitter that is also collecting unemployment checks?

greggie, I agree with your last statement. although I would love to help someone else during a difficult time, my family would come first.

Here, if you take an actual regular job, you lose out your unemployment that week, regardless of the amount. Babysitting just doesn't fit into the "regular job" category, according to my rep. However, my main reason for not hiring a nanny under the table for any reason is my own taxes. Unemployment sucks and I'd be ok helping someone get around it, but not at the expense of my own tax returns.

Yes, I would. I've been on unemployment. I know what it is like to only get a little bit of unemployment money a week. And the amount you get doesn't cover much. Michigan Unemployment law allows an individual to earn a certain amount each week, and still be able to collect unemployment. Random, non-permanent jobs are allowed. As long as the pay doesn't exceed the limit set. It is ok.

As a regular paying job, no. Not like a nanny, we'd want to claim that on our taxes. For a one-time deal, sure. In fact, it doesn't even violate unemployment in most cases. I asked during my unemployment interview. If it's something I set up for every Sat night, it would violate it. But to call someone in for a few hours now and then, they said it was ok.

Absolutely not. You can't have your unemployment and... er... eat it too.
