Exercise Improves Teens' Grades

Teens Who Exercise Regularly Get Better Grades

Teens who regularly exercise at least 17 minutes per day tend to get better grades, particularly in science, the NY Daily News reports. According to a study published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, 11-year-olds who exercised performed better in English, math, and science when they were assessed at ages 11, 13, and 16. Every 17 minutes of exercise per day at age 11 led to an improvement in marks for boys, and 12 minutes per day for girls by age 16.

"This is an important finding, especially in light of the current UK and European Commission policy aimed at increasing the number of females in science subjects," the study’s authors said. "The findings have implications for public health and education policy by providing schools and parents with a potentially important stake in meaningful and sustained increases in physical activity.”
