Families Working Overtime

Check the BlackBerry at the Door

Step away from the BlackBerry! Many hardworking mamas and papas find it tough to tear themselves away from their work since modern technology has made it so accessible. A blessing and a curse, it allows folks to work remotely, but also keeps them chained to their jobs. Mommy may walk in the door at 5 p.m., but she may not officially unplug from her duties until the computer is blank and her head hits the pillow.

In an effort to make "family time" live up to its name, many families ban texting, phoning or emailing during certain activities. Phones are turned off during dinner and iPhones are checked at the park so that mum and dad can focus on their number one task — tending to their offspring. What's the technology rule in your household?

BlackBerries and laptops are great for working remotely, but I think they are also addictive. I'm sure I'll be spending a lot less time on both when my new baby is born. We let calls go to voicemail during dinner.

Thanks to technology I am able to work remotely on Fridays. Something I wasn't able to do with my first son. Also with the ability to do so much from home I don't work until 7pm every night. I am away from my second child so much less than my first. I wish I would have had these alternatives available back then. As far as prioritizing things it took me a bit to get it under control. I do the bulk of my computer time when he is taking his nap (like now). With my iPhone I'm able to keep a casual eye on incoming email and only pick up the computer if I really have to.
