Is pole dancing, by definition, inappropriate for kids? A fitness studio in Canada is betting on the idea that the activity, once the domain of strip performers and increasingly offered to adults in gyms and dance studios, is not only moving into the mainstream, but that it's a great way to get kids moving.
Reasoning that climbing and swinging around a pole come naturally to kids, the Duncan, B.C. club, Twisted Grip Dance and Fitness, has so far registered three girls and one boy for "Little Spinners."
Critics question why any parent would sign their child up for pole dancing, with child psychologist Dr. Derek Swain warning that these kids may be taunted by their peers. He also feels that girls who learn pole dancing as children are more likely to become strippers as adults.
