As a parent you're faced with dozens of moments where a leap of faith about your child's safety is required. Maria Elena Molina, a Florida mom, took one such leap when she signed her son up for a village-run camp in the bucolic community of Biscayne Park. It seemed like a good bet at the time, as the community felt to her like "the safest place ever." But now she's urging other parents to avoid the village camp, as it was there that her son, then five, was sexually assaulted several times by two older boys in the bathroom.
Molina tried to get the police to investigate but found them unwilling. It was only after she enlisted the help of Kristi House, a child advocacy center, that she was able to get the village to take her claim seriously, which ultimately resulted in a $100,000 payout.
Molina, a 15-year resident of Biscayne Park, has moved away.
