Many, many years ago I used to travel as a model in Japan. In Harajuku,Tokyo there is an area where teens and young adults would go to dress up in rockabilly...and "Harajuku Girl" style clothing, etc...most of them are in bands and playing along the streets and dancing. It's like a street festival every weekend. I think the demands from a young person, because of strict Japanese culture are overwhelming and this was their way to be themselves and let loose! It was really cool in the 80's but over the years a lot of foreigners moved in and started selling illegal phone cards and other things and ruined the whole scene. Haven't been back in about 10 years. I believe Gwen probably traveled through Harajuku on tour and discovered the area. But that style has been around since the early 80's or maybe even earlier.

The term "Harajuku Girls" has been used by English-language media to describe teenagers dressed in any fashion style who are in the area of Harajuku.[7] These girls may be members of various sub-cultures including Gothic and Lolita, Ganguro, Gyaru, and Kogal. They may also be dressed as characters from an anime, movie, or manga (known as cosplay).
