Is It Harder to Breastfeed a Boy?

Is It Harder to Breastfeed a Boy?

With revelations of surprising parenting trends and childhood study findings making the news on a seemingly daily basis, it can sometimes be difficult to decipher whether a friend’s’ “I heard ____”  claim is supported by data or simply an old wives’ tale. To help you sort fact from fiction, here we break down the claim that boys are harder to breastfeed than girls.

True or False: It’s Harder to Breastfeed a Boy.

False

Circle of Moms members confidently answer this question with a resounding no. As Bonnie in the Circle of Moms Breastfeeding Moms Community shares: “Gender doesn't dictate their nursing, personality does, though! Betty G. a Lactation Consultant, agrees: “I have not seen a difference [between breastfeeding boys and girls]. It depends on the size of the baby, I think, and the baby's growth spurts."

While difficulty breastfeeding can’t be blamed on gender, there are many other reasons that can both explain it and help you get past it. MOBI Motherhood International (MOBI stands for Mothers Overcoming Breastfeeding Issues) mentions the following obstacles: pain, reflux, colic, allergies, sensory issues, and milk flow. And Circle of Moms members, in sharing their own stories, suggest many levers you can adjust, including your own diet, your baby's latch, the nursing positions you use, and how frequently you burp your baby.
